The “Around the Fort” Sprint Triathlon brought the best swimmers, runners and bikers to Fort Meade on Sept. 14. This was the first year of the event, which was sponsored by the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. “We’ve wanted to do this for a few years, just as a Gaffney thing,” said Lauren Williams, Gaffney Fitness Center’s sports, fitness and aquatics manager. “It was a team effort.” About 100 people competed in the triathlon, which was open to the public, ages 18 and older. The 100 reservations filled quickly and organizers hope to have more spots if they hold the event next year. The competition started at 8 a.m. at Gaffney with a 300-meter swim, then a 12-mile bike ride and lastly a 5K run. Participants were ranked by their collective time for all three events. Competitors had the option to enter individually or in relay teams. Individual competitors were categorized by gender and age. Relay teams were not subdivided. Prizes were awarded to top finishers.
