High-performance subambient radiative cooling enabled by optically selective and thermally insulating polyethylene aerogel

Recent progress in passive radiative cooling technologies has substantially improved cooling performance under direct sunlight. Yet, experimental demonstrations of daytime radiative cooling still severely underperform in comparison with the theoretical potential due to considerable solar absorption and poor thermal insulation at the emitter. In this work, we developed polyethylene aerogel (PEA)—a solar-reflecting (92.2% solar weighted reflectance at 6 mm thick), infrared-transparent (79.9% transmittance between 8 and 13 μm at 6 mm thick), and low-thermal-conductivity (kPEA = 28 mW/mK) material that can be integrated with existing emitters to address these challenges. Using an experimental setup that includes the custom-fabricated PEA, we demonstrate a daytime ambient temperature cooling power of 96 W/m2 and passive cooling up to 13°C below ambient temperature around solar noon. This work could greatly improve the performance of existing passive radiative coolers for air conditioning and portable refrigeration applications. Subambient cooling is vital for minimizing food shortage, promoting human well-being, and driving sustainable economic growth (1). Lack of and inadequate refr...

3M documents show company knew of PFAS dangers for decades

3M’s own studies showed PFAS compounds were not breaking down in the environment, were in their employees’ blood, and harmed laboratory test animals This conversation is moderated according to USA TODAY’s community rules. Please read the rules before joining the discussion. The chemical contaminant PFAs is emerging as a big problem in Michigan. Keith Matheny, Detroit Free Press A 3M environmental specialist, in a scathing resignation letter, accused company officials of being ”unethical” and more “concerned with markets, legal defensibility and image over environmental safety” when it came to PFAS, the emerging contaminant causing a potential crisis throughout Michigan and the country. PFOS, one of 3M’s chief PFAS products, ”is the most insidious pollutant since PCB,” Richard Purdy stated in his March 28, 1999, resignation letter, referring to a compound used in 3M’s ScotchGard stain-protection product line, among other uses. “It is probably more damaging than PCB because it does not degrade, whereas PCB does; it is more toxic to wildlife,” he stated, adding that PFOS’s end point in the environme...

Global Blow Molded Plastic Bottles Production Market Share, Revenue, and Average Price by Manufacturers Shared in a Latest Research Report

Blow molded plastic bottles are light weight plastic bottles which are produced by the process of molding plastic with machine blowing process to from plastic bottles, jars, and jugs. The process of molding is done by common blow molding technology used in different plastic such as polyethylene (PE), polyethylene terephthalate (pet), HDPE for molded plastic bottles requiring multi-layer technologies for moisture barrier requirements to improve product stability and compatibility. Primarily types of blow molding process that form blow molded plastic bottles include stretch blow molding, extrusion blow molding, compound blow molding and injection blow molding. One of the common and simplest blows molded plastic process involves extrusion blow molding which places a hot tube of plastic material placed in mold and air is injected through the top to form into molded shape. As the tube of hot plastic material touches the mold, the material freezes to form rigid shape. The growing demand from healthcare sector for packaging medical products will drive the growth prospects for the global blow molded plastic bottles market for the next four years. Some of the major factors responsible fo...

Leatherman expands magnetic tool family with K-series folding knives

Leatherman has today added to its Free family of free-swinging multitools, introducing the K-Series to bring a little difference in appearance and functionality to others in the lineup. The expansion includes four new knives, all defined by the Free collection’s magnetic locking mechanism for one-handed opening and closing. The Free collection was introduced earlier in the year when Leatherman kicked things off with the P4 and P2 multitools. These were quite different to the Leatherman tools of the past, featuring a magnetic opening and closing mechanism that could be controlled with a single thumb. These are priced at US$140 and and $120 respectively. Badge Pin Back Pin Clutch Leatherman followed this easy-release theme with the T2 and T4 in June, which cut down on the number of tools, therefore saving on weight and on price, with a cost of $40 and $60 respectively. The newly introduced K series splits the middle of these on cost, and is also a bit of a departure aesthetics-wise, with Leatherman describing it as a compact folding knife. With that comes a more traditional knife handle attached to a 8.4 cm (3.3 in) stainless steel blade. The Free K2 is the more minimal of the ne...

South Bend police getting body camera upgrades after OIS

Following the shooting, officers asked the department for more ways for their cameras to start recording automatically SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The South Bend Police Department is updating its body camera technology after a fatal police shooting last month in which the officer involved did not activate his body camera. Previously, officers’ body cameras activated automatically when the light bar on their police vehicle was turned on or if the vehicle reached a certain speed. The cameras could also be manually activated, which Sgt. Ryan O’Neil did not do when he fatally shot Eric Logan on June 16 in a downtown parking lot. Now, a change has been instituted in which body cameras are also automatically activated when a squad car door is opened. And soon, technology will be added to activate the cameras when an officer’s gun is drawn from his or her holster. The holster sensors are being provided to the department at no cost by BodyWorn, the company that manufactures the cameras. BodyWorn said in a statement that the holster sensor technology was not available when South Bend initially bought the cameras last year for $1.5 million. The new sensors will be equipped in the next 60 to 90 day...

Early adopters of LED lighting will remember 50,000 hour or even 100,000 hour lifetime ratings printed on

Early adopters of LED lighting will remember 50,000 hour or even 100,000 hour lifetime ratings printed on the box. But during a recent trip to the hardware store the longest advertised lifetime I found was 25,000 hours. Others claimed only 7,500 or 15,000 hours. And yes, these are brand-name bulbs from Cree and GE. So, what happened to those 100,000 hour residential LED bulbs? Were the initial estimates just over-optimistic? Was it all marketing hype? Or, did we not know enough about LED aging to predict the true useful life of a bulb? I put these questions to the test. Join me after the break for some background on the light bulb cartel from the days of incandescent bulbs (not a joke, a cartel controlled the life of your bulbs), and for the destruction of some modern LED bulbs to see why the lifetimes are clocking in a lot lower than the original wave of LED replacements. Any discussion of light bulb lifetime would be incomplete without mention of the Phoebus cartel, an international organization formed in 1924 by the world’s leading light bulb manufacturers to manipulate the bulb market. As discussed by Markus Krajewski in “The Great Lightbulb Conspiracy”, the cartel assigned ...
